Marine Rescue Hervey Bay (VMR 466)
A 38' steel ketch with 2 persons onboard was unable to make progress from the Moon Point area towards Urangan in light winds following an earlier gearbox failure. We provided an early evening tow to the boat harbour.
A 5 metre runabout with 2 persons onboard encountered fuel problems off Moon Point and required a tow back to the boat harbour.
A 5.4 metre runabout with 3 persons onboard experienced engine problems at Wathumba and required a tow back to Urangan.
We provide regular training courses at our base for your Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP) or VHF Only Certificate of Proficiency (MROVCP). Courses are held on various days of the week, to suit attendees, usually from 08:30 to 16:30. We make no charge for the course but the Office of Maritime Communication has an examination fee of $63.50. Upon passing the exam, held at the end of the day, they will issue your lifetime Licence. Radio Operators handbooks (if required) can be purchased from the VMR office. The next course is scheduled for Tuesday 16th July. If you have recently joined VMR Hervey Bay come along and let us introduce ourselves. Spend an hour or so in our conference room at the base and we will give you some introductory information about boating in the Hervey Bay area along with some background information on Volunteer Marine Rescue operations and procedures. Even if you are just thinking about joining VMR, or maybe wondering about becoming one of our volunteer workers, please come along and we will do our very best to answer any questions you may have. The day started at 02:00 with a disorientated vessel near Arch Cliffs, 2 persons and a dog onboard, requiring guidance back to Urangan Boat Harbour. In the middle of the day a half cabin with 2 persons onboard near Round Island had engine trouble and required a tow back to port. Late afternoon a 6 metre bowrider at Big Woody North with 2 persons onboard was unable to engage gear and required a tow home.
An 8.5 metre inboard off Point Vernon with 3 persons onboard experienced engine problems and required a tow back to the Burrum River.
Dirty fuel on a 7 metre runabout with 2 persons onboard necessitated a tow from Wathumba back to Urangan.
Both our rescue vessels participated in a search and rescue operation, looking for a missing person to the south of Round Island.
An evening call to a 4 metre tinny with 2 persons onboard in the Burrum River. We towed them back to the ramp at Burrum Heads.
